Ferrari 849 Testarossa: Flagship Hybrid Supercar Blends Heritage with Electrification Future

In the midst of the automotive industry's electrification wave, Ferrari unveiled its new flagship hybrid supercar, the 849 Testarossa, in Milan, Italy, on September 9, 2025. This model not only pays homage to the classic Testarossa of the 1980s but also bears the crucial responsibility of succeeding the SF90 Stradale, launched in 2019, as the top-tier model in Ferrari's product lineup. The revival of the iconic name is particularly timely, coming just months after Ferrari, in a significant legal victory in July 2025, won back the rights to the 'Testarossa' trademark at an EU court, paving the way for this modern reinterpretation. The introduction of the 849 Testarossa clearly demonstrates Ferrari's core strategy of embracing cutting-edge technology and moving towards an electrified future, while preserving the brand's deep historical heritage. The new car will be available in both Coupe (hardtop) and retractable-roof Spider versions, catering to diverse driver preferences.

Innovative Powertrain: The Perfect Fusion of a Potent Internal Combustion Engine and Efficient Electric Motors

The heart of the 849 Testarossa's power lies in the latest version of Ferrari's award-winning twin-turbo V8 engine, with a displacement of 4 liters. This internal combustion engine has been thoroughly revised, increasing its power output to an impressive 830 cv (or 830 hp), an increase of 50 cv over its predecessor, while maintaining the same displacement. Its power-to-liter ratio reaches a remarkable 208 cv/l, showcasing Ferrari's continuous advancements in internal combustion engine technology.

Concurrently, the 849 Testarossa adopts a PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) architecture derived from the SF90 Stradale, combining the powerful V8 internal combustion engine with 3 electric motors, totaling 220 cv of electric power. Two of these electric motors are located on the front axle, forming the RAC-e (Race e-Diff) system, which enables advanced 4WD (four-wheel drive) functionality and torque vectoring to maximize traction and improve efficiency during corner exits. The third electric motor is an MGU-K (Motor Generator Unit – Kinetic), positioned on the rear axle, directly drawing from Scuderia's invaluable experience in Formula 1 racing.

This sophisticated hybrid configuration results in a maximum total system output of an astonishing 1050 cv (or 1050 hp), 50 hp higher than the SF90 Stradale. In terms of performance, the 849 Testarossa accelerates from 0-100 km/h in less than 2.3 seconds and boasts a top speed exceeding 330 km/h (205 mph), once again cementing Ferrari's leading position in the supercar segment.

Heritage and Innovation: The Fusion of Design Aesthetics and Aerodynamics

The design of the 849 Testarossa aims to push boundaries, with its unique and timeless lines inspired by the Sports Prototypes of the 1970s, while cleverly incorporating a tribute to the classic Testarossa of the 1980s. This blend of historical and modern racing solutions significantly optimizes the vehicle's thermal performance and substantially increases the 849 Testarossa's downforce, ensuring its stability and handling under extreme driving conditions.

Regarding the driving experience, the sound within the cockpit of the 849 Testarossa is powerful and exhilarating. The new car introduces a new acoustic dimension; the revised gear-shift strategy, inherited from the SF90 XX Stradale, produces an even more thrilling sound during aggressive upshifts, further enhancing Ferrari's iconic driving passion. Additionally, the 849 Testarossa offers the exclusive Assetto Fiorano configuration, designed to maximize the vehicle's dynamic and aerodynamic performance, providing an even more exceptional experience for those seeking the ultimate drive.

Market Strategy and Ferrari's Electrification Journey

From a market strategy perspective, the starting price for the 849 Testarossa Coupe version in Italy is set at €460,000 (approximately $540,000), while the Spider version starts at €500,000. Initial delivery plans indicate that the Coupe and Spider versions are expected to begin deliveries in the second and third quarters of next year (i.e., 2026), respectively, starting with the European market. Deliveries for U.S. customers are anticipated to follow approximately 3 months later, with prices expected to be higher due to import duties.

Under the leadership of CEO Benedetto Vigna, Ferrari is actively advancing its electrification strategy. The company plans to begin showcasing its first electric vehicle (EV) next month (i.e., October 2025). The launch of this EV will be a three-phase process, culminating in its global debut next spring (i.e., Spring 2026). Despite Ferrari's shift towards electrification, Vigna has reiterated that the company will continue to produce gasoline and hybrid vehicles while developing EVs, reflecting its prudent and confident approach to a diversified powertrain lineup.

As part of its new model launch plan, Ferrari introduced the new hybrid model 296 Speciale and its convertible version in April 2025, based on the Ferrari 296 launched in 2021. Subsequently, in July 2025, Ferrari also unveiled the pure gasoline-powered Amalfi coupe, which replaces and upgrades the successful entry-level model Roma, launched in 2019. These initiatives collectively illustrate Ferrari's clear path towards gradually adapting to and leading the transformation of the automotive industry, while maintaining its unique brand allure.
